Access Numbers
E-mail is short for electronic mail. Electronic mail is extremely useful because documents, photos, and more can be sent around the globe in a matter of seconds. This is much more convenient than the traditional postal system (snail mail) which can take days if not weeks.

Sending or receiving e-mail requires Internet access and an e-mail address. An e-mail address includes the account name and the server name that the e-mail will be downloaded from. E-mail addresses always use the @ to separate the account name and server name. A typical e-mail address looks like this: username@LL.net.

Before sending e-mail, you must configure your e-mail program. For step-by-step configuration instructions call our 24 hour technical support line at 1-888-200-2120.

When you e-mail someone, they get your name, your e-mail address, your message, and any attachments (usually indicated by a paper clip symbol in most e-mail programs) you have included, such as photos, or other files. You are free to input whatever you want for your name when you configure your e-mail program.

E-mail Safety Issues

  • Spam - Spam can be very annoying and is basically defined as unsolicited bulk e-mail. It is much like the advertising circulars you receive in your regular postal service mail.

  • Spam e-mail is often disguised to look like legitimate e-mail at first glance. However, it is usually an advertisement of some sort, often for adult oriented Web sites or financial schemes. Always assume that the advertisement or offer is not legitimate. You should never respond to these messages — ignore them or delete them.

  • Identity: It is very easy for people on the Internet to assume a different identity. Therefore, when you are exchanging e-mail with someone whom you have never met in person, you should assume that they may not be truthful. Also, it can be risky and even dangerous to give out information via e-mail that can be used to track you down or contact you directly.

E-mail FYI:

  • Etiquette - TYPING IN ALL CAPS IS CONSIDERED SHOUTING in e-mail and is generally considered to be rude.

  • Emoticons - These are keyboard characters grouped together to resemble different facial expressions when looked at sideways. They can be used to enhance your e-mail and communicate more effectively.
  • :-) is a smile.

    :-( is a frown.

:-P is someone sticking his tongue out.

With a little creativity, you can create your own emoticons. You may pick up more ideas for emoticons by seeing friends or relatives use them when chatting on the Internet, or view NetLingo's extensive list at http://www.netlingo.com/smiley.cfm.
